AAACN Signs On to Letter Supporting Nurse Managed Health Clinics

At the recommendation of the AAACN Legislative Committee, AAACN signed on to a letter of support indicating the nursing community is united behind the effort to increase funding for nurse-managed health centers. The National Nursing Centers Consortium (NNCC) is working with Senator Inouye (D-HI) and Senator Alexander (R-TN) to introduce a bill in the Senate that would create a $50 million grant program for nurse-managed health centers run by nurse practitioners.

Representative Lois Capps (D-CA 23) and Representative Lee Terry (R-NE 02) have also agreed to introduce an identical companion bill in the House. Both bills are entitled, “The Nurse-Managed Health Clinic Investment Act of 2009.” Before introducing the bill, Representative Capps asked to see a list of nursing organizations that will support this legislation. Nurse-managed health centers are important to the health care safety-net that provides critically needed primary care and wellness services to the medically underserved regardless of their ability to pay.
