Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Resources

AAACN is fully committed to advancing our efforts around diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). We are actively redesigning our governance infrastructure to ensure the future leadership and membership of AAACN is as diverse as the environments we proudly work and live within.

Additionally, AAACN’s DEI Committee continues to work to create opportunities and resources our members can utilize in their own practice.

Archived Webinars

AAACN is committed to advancing the field of ambulatory care nursing and ensuring that all patients receive equitable and inclusive care. In pursuit of this mission, AAACN offers webinars on DEI topics to educate and empower healthcare professionals. These webinars foster a more inclusive and culturally competent healthcare environment, enabling nurses to better serve the diverse needs of their patient populations and contribute to a more equitable healthcare system.

The DEI Committee facilitates webinars on a quarterly basis, and most are shared here with the speakers’ permission.

Impact on AAACN Resources

The Scope and Standards of Practice for Professional Ambulatory Care Nursing explicitly identifies and defines ambulatory care nursing practice in outpatient settings. The 10th edition, published in 2023, contains a brand-new Standard on Cultural Humility, created with huge input from the Chairs of the DEI Committee at the time of publication.

This new Standard represents the first step in a larger plan to incorporate the DEI Committee into the oversight of AAACN’s resources to ensure they are representative of the diversity, equity, and inclusion ideals AAACN values.

Juneteenth

AAACN’s DEI Committee wishes to express our support of the LGBTQIA+ community this month and always. We condemn any discrimination based on sexual, gender, or other identifying characteristics. Love is Love. Hate has no place in healthcare.

In nursing, we devote our lives to the promise to “First, do no harm”. We do not recite the Hippocratic oath, but instead the Nightingale pledge, where we confirm to never knowingly or mischievously engage in any evil or malicious activity.

When we make the decision to withhold care, or care differently for our patients or our colleagues due to their personal life choices, we are knowingly engaging in harm. We are aware of how these actions negatively impact others.

Our ask of all of our nursing colleagues, this month and always, is to take a stand against discrimination in all forms. Step up and advocate for those whose voices are not heard. Be the leaders you were all born to be.
