Information for Oncology Nurses from AAACN Member Barb Pacca

Joanne Heitzman is a survivor of Leiomyosarcoma (LMS), a cancer of the smooth muscle tissues, and the aunt of AAACN member Barb Pacca. The new Joanne Heitzman Medical Database was recently launched as a tool to help researchers in finding treatments and a cure for LMS.

The database will be populated with information from a Comprehensive Medical Questionnaire (also created by Barb's aunt) in hopes that researchers will be able to confidentially match the information with tissue samples from the same donor.

Green Tip: Don't Flush That Old Medication

We've all been known to keep medications well past their expiration date. If you're planning some summer cleaning, be sure to dispose of old medications; these drugs pose a risk to others in your household. But don't just flush them! Many old medications are considered household hazardous waste and should be disposed of properly. This means no flushing down the toilet or drain unless the medication instructions specifically say you can do so. Before you flush, try calling your local pharmacies to see if they have a drug take-back program.
